Torrevieja (roughly 40 km south from Alicante) is situated between the sea and two big salt lakes, which give the place a wholesome microclimate. Originally it was a small fishing village, depending on „white gold”, i.e. salt excavated on site. Nowadays the salt lakes are national parks and visitors are enruptured by the great variety of birds inhabiting the region. The 19th century brought the peak of town’s prosperity when Charles IV transferred the salt production offices to Torrevieja and then took care of the development of infrastructure and of judiciary. Up till now salt is the number one export good and Torrevieja remains one of the main salt producers in Europe. The name of the town comes from an old observation tower (torre - tower, vieja – old).
